A good home science question changes one thing
Help children distinguish a guess, an observation and an explanation with a paper bridge.
Ask a question you can actually test
“What is the strongest bridge in the world?” is much bigger than a kitchen-table experiment. “Does folded paper bend less than flat paper across this gap?” is testable now. Put two equal books on the floor a small handspan apart. Lay flat paper across them. Predict what happens when an empty plastic cup sits in the middle, then observe.
Keep the comparison fair
Fold an equal sheet like a fan and bridge the same gap. Use the same cup. If you change the paper, gap and load together, you cannot easily tell which change mattered. Children need not memorise “controlled variable” before practising the idea. Ask, “What did we keep the same?” Draw both shapes and describe bending rather than announcing that folded paper is always stronger.
A prediction is allowed to be wrong
Say your own prediction before testing and revise it openly. “I expected the flat sheet to hold, but it bent” models useful honesty. A result is not a prize for guessing correctly. Repeat once to see whether placement affected the outcome. If results differ, describe that difference; do not secretly adjust the setup until it gives the answer you expected.
Safety is part of the method
Use only a light empty cup, build on the floor, and never test with a child’s weight or heavy objects. Water activities need continuous adult supervision, very little water and immediate emptying. Avoid heat, chemicals and unknown plants. These small activities introduce observation and comparison; they are not proof of universal scientific laws. End by asking what new question the result suggests.
