How to Evaluate a Curriculum Before You Buy — OpenSchooler
The 7-question test
- Scope: does it state exactly what is covered, by month or unit?
- Sequence: does each unit build on the previous one, with prerequisites named?
- Practice load: are there enough problems for mastery, not just exposure?
- Assessment: are there checks, answer keys, and guidance on what “good” looks like?
- Time honesty: does it state realistic daily minutes for your child’s age?
- Adaptability: can you skip, slow down, or swap topics without breaking the flow?
- Exit proof: what certificate, portfolio, or test score will your child hold at the end?
Red flags
- No sample lessons before payment.
- “Works for every child” claims with no placement test.
- All video, no practice or feedback.
- Hidden exam, shipping, or renewal fees.
A 30-minute trial routine
Take one sample lesson: preview (5 min), learn (15 min), practice and check (10 min). If you cannot tell what your child learned, the curriculum failed the trial — not your child.
