Parent Checklist: Start Your Child's Learning Year Right — OpenSchooler

By OpenSchooler · Published · Updated

Why a checklist helps

A short written plan reduces daily negotiation. When goals, routines, and materials are decided once, school days run on autopilot and children know what “done” looks like.

The 8-point checklist

  1. Goals (2–3 only): one each for reading, writing, and maths is plenty.
  2. Routine: fixed start time, 25–45 minute blocks by age, real breaks.
  3. Space: quiet corner, daylight, supplies within reach.
  4. Baseline: a dated note of current reading level and maths facts mastered.
  5. Materials audit: list what you own before buying anything new.
  6. Local rules: confirm attendance/record requirements where you live.
  7. Health: vision, hearing, dental — learning struggles are sometimes sensory.
  8. Weekly review: 20 minutes every week to keep or change the plan.
